Can i be imagining tinnitus?

Tinnitus is, in general, the sensation of noises in the ears. In some cases, this noise actually exists (this is known as objective tinnitus). And other times, they can be phantom noises in the ears (that is, the sound doesn't really exist and is not heard by others, which is known as subjective tinnitus).

Tinnitus

describes the sensation of hearing sounds without external stimuli.

Most of the time: If you imagine tinnitus, you have it. On the other hand, if you frequently experience the symptoms described above and have them for six months or longer, you may have chronic tinnitus. Although not a serious health problem, the condition can be irritating and debilitating. And don't worry, it's probably not a form of schizophrenia or another psychiatric condition either.

The most likely cause is musical ear syndrome, apophenia, or auditory pareidolia. The brain uses pattern recognition to try to make sense of sounds. Sometimes you misunderstand what you hear. For example, pareidolia occurs when you interpret those meaningless noises in something you've heard before, such as music.

If there's no noise and you're still listening to music, this could be a musical hallucination. If you feel a phantom ringing in your ears, you may be reluctant to admit it to someone out of fear of being accused of having an overactive imagination.
